The Most Real Things...

So, Matt is in 1st grade and already he's getting teased by a few girls for believing in Santa Clause.  Already?  What happens in theses houses that the magic has been extinguished so soon?  These aren't kids whose households just don't celebrate in that way.  These are kids that say their moms & dads bring them presents "from Santa."  Maybe they have older siblings who've ruined it for them.  Maybe they overheard a conversation between two adults.  Who knows what happened?  I actually feel bad for those little girls.

Matthew still believes.  His faith hasn't been shaken.  He can't fathom how those girls don't believe.  And that is SUCH a relief to me.  I hope he believes for the next five years.  I hope he believes for the rest of his life!  I have all kinds of excuses waiting in the wings in case the questions start getting more pointed.  I want him to believe as long as possible!  There's a part of ME that still believes!

I don't feel like it's lying.  I feel like it's preserving faith.  And when, finally, I can no longer uphold the existence of Santa, I'll give him this to read, like my mother did with me, and hope he will understand that I haven't made a fool of him all these years, that I haven't been lying, and that the "truth" is worth keeping as a secret, and not something to be used to spoil anyone else's beliefs.

  1. Isn't that the truth!! I love that. Where did you find it? Well I am going to go ahead a pin it just in case I need it. Today is my sons last day before Christmas break. He's in the second grade. I been holding my breath that he neither comes home asking about last weeks tragedy or whether or not there is a Santa Claus. I will be glad to have him home for a couple of weeks under the magic spell of the season.

    1. I found a picture of the original editorial on http://www.newseum.org/yesvirginia
When I was a little girl who finally gave up on Santa my mom gave me a little book, which featured it. I've loved it ever since.

  2. It makes me SO sad that school children start their teasing and bullying so young!
Reagan is only two and I am nervous for what it is going to be like when she starts school.
I hope their innocence can last as long as it is willing!

  3. Childhood is so short. I try to keep the magic alive as long as I can for my little ones. My kids started getting teased in 6th grade for believing, and that's when I broke it to them. Before that, when they ask me if Santa is real, I always say, "I LOVE Santa!" Not lying, but not quite answering their question. They take it as an answer, though, and keep on believing.

  4. When I was in first grade my teacher sat us down for story time and said "no one here believes in Santa do you?" Of course I said no.... that was such a sad day for me!

  5. Awwww, I didn't learn that Santa wasn't real until around the age of 14. We told my older kids a year or so ago. I have an 18 month old, and I hope that my older ones will play along and won't spoil it for him. :)

    1. Oh wow, you had Santa for a long time! I think I was around 9 or 10. That's so good though, I think kids should believe as long as possible.
